Sewage Rising? That Is an Emergency We Answer

Sewage coming up through a floor waste or gully is an emergency, and we treat it as one. A real person answers the phone in Artarmon, and a licensed plumber heads out straight away.

Winter cold snaps are the quiet season for trouble here. Aged clay pipework beneath the interwar homes contracts and shifts, joints that were holding start to weep, and a slow blockage turns into a backup overnight.

When water is rising, turn off the water at the meter and stop running anything into the drain. Then call (02) 9139 8009, day or night, weekends included.

Catch it early

Signs You Have a Blocked Drain

A drain rarely blocks without warning. Small signs show up first, and catching them early keeps a clean job from turning into a sewage cleanup.

Watch for these:

  • Water draining slowly, or standing in the sink, shower or floor waste.
  • A gurgle from the toilet or drain when another fixture empties.
  • A smell of sewage near a gully, outside drain or wet area.
  • Water rising in the shower when you flush the toilet.
  • Damp patches or overflow around an outside drain after rain.

One slow drain is a nuisance. Two fixtures acting up together usually means the blockage is further down the main line, and that is worth a call before it backs up.

Why Neighbours in Artarmon Choose a Local Team

Artarmon is a suburb of young professionals in a mix of period houses and newer units, and the two need different things from a plumber. A double-brick bungalow hides old clay lines beneath the garden; an apartment has shared stacks where one blockage affects several homes.

We work on both every week, so we know where the trouble tends to sit. That means less time hunting for the cause and a clear price you approve before anything starts.

You also get a plumber who turns up when we say, with a real person on the phone the whole time.

How We Clear a Drain Properly

Clearing a drain properly means finding the cause and proving it is gone, not just poking a hole through the blockage. Here is how a job runs.

  1. We find the blockage. A CCTV drain camera goes down the line so we can see exactly what is causing it and where.
  2. We quote the price. You approve it before any work starts, with no call-out charge and no obligation.
  3. We clear it. A high-pressure water jetter blasts the pipe wall back to bare, roots and grease and all.
  4. We prove it is clear. The camera goes back down to show the drain running freely, and we tidy up before we go.

If the pipe itself has failed, we show you the footage and talk through a lasting fix rather than a repeat visit.

Local knowledge

What Causes Blocked Drains in Artarmon

Most blocked drains here come down to the age of the pipes in the ground. Century-old clay drains under the 1910s to 1930s housing fracture and let in roots and debris, and that single fact drives most of the call-outs off Artarmon Road and Muttama Road.

The East Artarmon conservation area is the pattern in one place. Its Federation and Californian bungalow homes, mostly double-brick with red or brown tiled roofs, were plumbed with earthenware drains that have now spent a hundred years in shifting shale.

Roots are the second half of the story. The leafy bungalow streets around Artarmon Reserve, the 10ha bushland reserve at the end of Burra Road, give roots a constant path into any joint that has opened up.

The terrain adds a wet-weather twist. Artarmon sits high on a ridge, but its steep gullies funnel stormwater and silt into the lower streets during a heavy downpour, loading drains that were already struggling.

Different building eras left different pipe stock behind, too. The pre-war clay lines, the 1960s to 1980s infill and the newer builds each fail in their own way, which is why we camera first rather than assume.

Common questions

Your Questions, Answered

What is pipe relining and do I need it?

Pipe relining is a no-dig repair. We push a resin sleeve through the old drain and cure it in place, so it hardens into a new pipe inside the failing one. You need it when a drain keeps blocking because the pipe has cracked or roots have opened the joints, which is common with the century-old clay lines under Artarmon's Federation streets. We run a camera first so you can see the damage before you decide.

Who is responsible for a blocked sewer, me or Sydney Water?

As a rule, everything from your property boundary back to the house is yours. The main out in the street belongs to Sydney Water. Most blockages we clear sit on the owner's side, in the lines running under the yard or slab. If a camera shows the fault is past your boundary, we tell you, and that stretch becomes the water authority's to fix.

Do you charge a call-out fee in Artarmon?

No, we have a $0 call-out fee, so a plumber comes to look at the drain at no charge. You approve the price first, and the quote you agree to is the amount you are charged. Book online for $50 off, and seniors get 10% off on top of that.

Why do older Artarmon homes get recurring blocked drains?

The East Artarmon conservation area is full of 1910s to 1930s houses laid with earthenware clay drains. After a hundred years in the ground those pipes crack at the joints. Roots from the mature street trees then find the gaps and grow back every season. Clearing the roots buys time, but a camera inspection shows whether the pipe needs relining to stop it returning.

Can you clear tree roots out of a drain?

Yes. We cut roots out with a high-pressure water jetter, which strips the pipe wall right back rather than punching a hole through the mass. The heavily treed streets near the Burra Road end of Artarmon Reserve send roots into old clay joints constantly. We then camera the line to prove it runs clear, and we talk through relining if the joints keep letting roots back in.

Do you offer a 24/7 emergency blocked drain service?

Yes, at any hour, right through weekends and public holidays. A real person answers the phone every time, not a recorded message. Sewage backing up into a house cannot wait until morning, so call (02) 9139 8009 and we head out straight away with a licensed plumber.
